Mary Lynne Hulme

I’ve been coming to Park City for an annual ski trip since my early 20’s. When Husband Andrew and I were ready to retire and leave our life-long home in the SF Bay Area, Park City quickly rose to the top of the list. That was seven years ago. After four years enjoying life in Park City, Andrew very suddenly passed away.

I’ve spent the past three years figuring out who I am as not part of a couple. It’s been a journey! Staying busy with friends and social activities has helped tremendously. Though Andrew and I joined PCMSC when we first moved here on the recommendation of our Newcomers friends, it’s since being single that I have opened my Jeremy Ranch home to a few TGIF events. I’ve also put together a PCMSC cat-ski trip to Soldier Mountain to take place in March. I enjoy hosting social events, and I love to ski; volunteering for PCMSC has been a great way to meet people and make new friends.

We moved to Park City in 2014 to help turn around and sell backcountry.com. By the winter of 15/16 we had achieved that sale and I was ready to ski for 100 days, something I hadn’t done since college. Bob Johnson, a neighbor and friend from the 80s/90s in New Jersey had introduced us to the Park City Mountain Sports Club. I began to ski with Vince Gillotti every Monday and Thursday at Deer Valley to get some variety in my ambition. Skiing with Vince, a former Pennsylvanian instructor, was fun; we did a variety of trails and met many new folks who would become longtime friends.

After that first year, I was asked by Vince/MaryLou and Bill/Pris Waston to help out by volunteering to lead a group. It became one of the best decisions I have made during our time here in Park City.

While I had some experience, instructing and race coaching during different sections my ski career, leading is really about reading the “white room”: you make sure people are having fun both on the chair and hill. Sure, there are some drills that people at different levels may want to practice. Vince and Mary Lou as well as Bill and Pris Watson keep you abreast of YouTube ski videos to help with that. If volunteering to help lead a group is something you want to pursue, I would encourage you to send a note to Ellen Sherk who runs winter sports, and volunteer at Park City/Canyons or Deer Valley. You will ski with members at your talent level and it’s a great way to get some fresh air and meet more people than many volunteer gigs allow. 

Special thanks to Jon Burke, Steve Peer and Jane Sagerman who have been co-leaders with me in the “non-stop” group at Deer Valley over the years. It’s been a privilege to ski with Mike Borelli, Bob Johnson, Marvin Kabatznick, Erin Shaffer, Chuck Mollard (when the road to Snowbird was closed), Gary Gegick, Patrick Arnault, Bjorn Liencres, Sophia Lucey, David Enberg, Kristen Hanson, Rich Marx, Dave Klinges, Barb LeMaric  and the incomparable duo Teresa and Terry Polistina as well as others  who have changed our life in Park City. We met these people all through our participation in Deer Valley PCMSC sessions.
