Uphill Skiing & Backcountry

Whether you're interested in learning the basics of uphill skiing (also known as skinning) or you're an experienced backcountry skier looking for alpine adventures, PCMSC offers winter touring opportunities for a variety of skill levels.

Intro to Uphill Skiing

Our introductory uphill skiing events are designed for skiers who are new to skinning or want to become more comfortable using touring equipment.

These outings are typically held on groomed resort routes with low avalanche risk, allowing participants to learn at a comfortable pace while practicing the fundamentals of uphill travel, transitions, and equipment use. Volunteer leaders provide guidance throughout the outing, making these events ideal for beginners.

Many participants rent touring equipment for their first outing before deciding whether to invest in their own gear.

Regular Uphill Sessions

Throughout the winter, members also organize regular uphill skiing sessions at Park City Mountain before the lifts open. These fitness-oriented outings welcome a range of abilities and provide a great opportunity to enjoy the mountain before the crowds arrive.

Routes, meeting locations, and schedules are posted on the Club Calendar.

Backcountry and Sidecountry Skiing

For experienced ski tourers, PCMSC also offers occasional backcountry and sidecountry tours in the Wasatch Mountains.

These outings travel in avalanche terrain and require participants to have appropriate experience, avalanche awareness, and the required safety equipment. Depending on the objective, participants may also be expected to have completed avalanche education.

Because these trips involve more advanced terrain and smaller groups, registration requirements and participant qualifications will be outlined in each event listing.

Looking for Upcoming Uphill or Backcountry Events?

Members can visit the Club Calendar to view upcoming outings, meeting locations, equipment requirements, and registration information. The calendar always contains the most current schedules and event details.

What Equipment Do I Need?

Equipment requirements vary by event.

  • Introductory uphill events typically require touring skis, skins, boots, poles, a backpack, helmet, layers, food, and water. Rental equipment is often available locally.
  • Backcountry tours require appropriate touring equipment plus avalanche safety gear, including a beacon, shovel, and probe. Individual event descriptions will specify all required equipment and prerequisites.
